How to Save Money While Traveling

Many families choose to travel in the summer because kids are home from school, and everyone wants to enjoy the beautiful weather.

However, travel costs can add up quickly. From airfare, to accommodation, to food, to kenneling your animals back at home, going on vacation is often costly.

Thankfully, it’s possible to travel inexpensively. Use these 3 tips to stay within your budget so you can enjoy your vacation.

1. Look for Flights with Lots of Layovers

At a certain point, you need to decide what’s more important to you: your time, or your money.

If you have more money than time, you may want to spend extra on a nonstop flight for the convenience. If you’re in the opposite boat and have more time than money, then look for flights with multiple layovers.

You can also search for red eye flights as they’re often extremely cheap. Flights.google.com is a great website to start with. It lists the cheapest airfares to multiple destinations. That leads us to our next point…

2. Stay Flexible With Your Destination and Dates

Keeping your destination flexible allows you to search for the cheapest flights possible. These flights may even be to places that haven’t been on your radar. You can use this as an opportunity to explore if you want to embark on a true adventure.

Why not take a chance and spend a few days in a new locale with your family? You never know – you may end up falling in love with it.

Likewise, stay as flexible on dates as you can. Websites like hipmunk.com allow you to view the cost of flights in a price graph format. You can see how much it will cost for you to fly on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, etc. for up to 21 days.

Being flexible on your travel dates can save you a significant amount of money. This is because flights are often cheaper on certain days of the week, or during certain times of the month.

3. Look at Alternative Accommodations

Hotels can be expensive. Instead, try looking for accommodation through websites like airbnb.com. You can rent a room at a fraction of the price of a hotel room.

You can also save a lot of money by staying with family or friends, but that limits your destination options. Plus, staying at a place on Airbnb has an additional benefit: you’ll often have access to a kitchen.

Food is one of the highest costs people encounter when they travel. Cooking your own meals on vacation can save you hundreds depending on how big your family is.
