4 Ways To Cut Your Spending

If you’re tracking your spending and keeping up with your budget, that’s great! But have you actually ever questioned the amounts you’re paying for certain things?

Or did you take it as a given that you would just have to pay a certain amount for things like cable and your cell phone bill?

You can take action to save more money but cutting your spending. Here are 4 ways to do it:

Negotiate Your Bills and Shop Around

When was the last time you called any of your providers and asked them for a lower rate?

If the answer isn’t “a few months ago”, what are you waiting for? Pick up the phone and call!

You might think there’s no reason to try, but plenty of people have been pleasantly surprised by the power of asking. You have nothing to lose here, and the savings can add up if multiple providers can give you a discount.

If you’ve asked for a discount to no avail, shop around. This is especially true for insurance. You have to do what’s best for you and your wallet. Don’t be afraid to switch to lower-cost service.

Evaluate your Food Expenditures

Food is the number one budget-buster for many people. It’s very easy to go over budget by justifying your purchases. This gets particularly bad if you develop a habit of going out to eat constantly.

Devote some time to cutting back costs where food is concerned. Here are some ways to do this:

  • Couponing: There are plenty of websites out there dedicated to helping you find the best coupons and deals out there. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is go to the store’s website directly.
  • Meal Plan: Consider what meals you like making (and eating) on a weekly basis, and create a shopping list based on the ingredients. This should also cut down on food waste, and encourage you to cook at home more often.
  • Know the Sales: Stores claim to have sales on items all the time, but in reality, you can get certain things for far better prices. Don’t be afraid to look at what other stores are selling items for, and know the regular and rock-bottom prices for the things you buy regularly.

Stop Overindulging

Do you enjoy treating yourself a little too much? If you have daily treats, consider making them weekly treats instead; if you treat yourself weekly, make them monthly. This will help cut down your spending by spacing out your spending trips.

Take A No-Spend Challenge

This can be difficult, but try to do a spending fast. That means absolutely no spending for a certain period of time. It can be challenging, but it’s a great experience to go through to see what your spending weaknesses are.
